As many of you will be aware, on Monday October 21st Martin Gallagher tendered his resignation to the Committee, as Captain of the NSWSSGA and emailed a statement to Clubs in the ten divisions of the SSP, confirming his decision.
Martin was first elected to the SSP Committee 10 years ago after being nominated by the late Jim Earl, one of the co-founders of the SSP alongside the current Patron, Barry Ewert.
Martin served on the Committee and as Vice-Captain to Alan Potts, prior to being elected as Captain in 2018. When Martin took over as Captain, the SSP competition consisted of 52 Clubs which has grown to 67 during his tenure. Martin’s dedication and energy in managing and growing the Pennant during that time, is evidenced by the countless hours he has put into running and growing the competition, the thousands of kilometers he has travelled, enticing new clubs to join the Pennant, as well as attending and officiating at games each year throughout the Divisional and Final series.
Martin was also instrumental in developing, updating and maintaining the Association’s website, which has evolved to become a critical component and leading point of communication with the Pennant’s 900 plus registered players and an area in which Martin has spent untold hours keeping the site current at all times.
Martin’s decision to resign following the completion of another very successful Pennant year and Super Senior Championship, to spend more time with his immediate family and friends is fully endorsed by the current committee and he leaves the SSP in a very strong, healthy and financially viable position.
Despite the fact, that in this discourse we are paying tribute to one individual, Martin has been extremely fortunate, in his time at the helm of the SSP, to have been supported by a disparate mixture of talented and enthusiastic fellow committee members, who have assisted in the implementation of many initiatives over the past ten years.
The full committee (and I am sure all the Clubs in the SSP), thank Martin for his tireless efforts over the past ten years and wish him a happy, healthy and golf-filled retirement and we trust that he will still be available for his counsel in the future when the need arises.
Yours in golf,
Bruce Threlfo – Acting Secretary, on behalf of the NSWSSGA Committee.
