5th Hole – St Michael’s Golf Club
Whilst playing SSP Pennants for Bonnie Doon v The Lakes at St Michaels, John Coomber produced some Hole-in -One magic on the 5th hole at St Michaels (playing at 155m). A very pretty hole, like hitting through a chute guarded by tea trees & shrubs over a sandy hazard and slightly blind view when hitting the green.
After winning the previous hole, John was first up on the tee. John thought he hit a pretty good 5 Hybrid but couldn’t see the ball finish. When John got up to the green there was a ball just short, which he thought must be his, but it turned out to be his team mate playing partner Geoff Lawson’s. After checking the back bunker, with no success, John thought he should check better try the hole, and there it was, nestled in the bottom of the cup, smiling up at him!
After approximately 60 years of playing golf its John’s 2nd Hole-in-One.
It took John to two-up and somehow, maintained his composure to win the match 2/1. His win also assisted his Bonnie Doon teammates to defeat The Lakes 5 to 3.
As a segue, with John’s esteemed career in Journalism, it’s nice to switch and communicate a story about John’s golfing feats.
Congratulations John!
(Thank you to Bill Maystorich-Captain/Manager of Bonnie Doon who alerted SSP of John’s feat)
